Opiate Addiction Recovery

Steps Towards Recovery

You have already made an important step towards your recovery by recognizing that your addiction is causing significant problems and keeping you from living the life you want.

Our team of compassionate doctors and caring support staff are dedicated in assisting you towards a healthy recovery.  Most find that the best way to ensure a successful recovery is with counseling, medication initiation with Suboxone, and regular follow up with an addiction physician.  Support from drug free friends and 12-step programs are also very effective tools to help with your recovery.

During your initial visit, your doctor will discuss your individualized treatment plan and provide you with comprehensive resources to help you take steps towards a successful recovery.

Suboxone and Subutex

Medications containing buprenorphine, such as Suboxone and Subutex, can decrease cravings for opioids, reduce illicit drug use, suppress symptoms of opiate withdrawal, block the effects of other opioids and help patients stay in treatment.

The active ingredient buprenorphine, is found in Suboxone, Subutex and Zubsolv. The medications are all approved for treatment of opiate dependency.  Suboxone was the first opioid medication approved for the treatment of opioid dependence in an office-based setting.  By law, it can be dispensed for take-home use, just as medications used to treat other medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, which means that its effect is not as strong compared to full opioid agonist like heroin, oxycodone, or methadone. Suboxone has several advantages over methadone for the treatment of opiate addiction. Suboxone is less sedating and daily office visits are NOT necessary. This makes it easier for you to function in daily activities, work, and get your life back together.

Suboxone, unlike Subutex, also contains naloxone, an opioid antagonist, to discourage people from dissolving the medicine and injecting it.  When Suboxone is used as directed by placing it under the tongue, only a very small amount of naloxone reaches the bloodstream.  For this reason, the patient only feels the effect of buprenorphine.  However, if a patient misuses the medication and injects Suboxone, it can quickly cause severe withdrawal symptoms.

Counseling

Counseling is an important component of recovery.  As a patient at our Suboxone clinic, you will be meeting with your opiate addiction doctor at least monthly. During this time, your addiction doctor will be counseling you on your road to recovery.  An important component of counseling is helping you identify triggers (people, places and things) that put you at a higher risk of relapse.

Counseling is helpful in developing effective coping strategies to better deal with stressors in your life, so that you have better and healthier ways to deal with situations that in the past may have led to drug use. Counseling can help you understand how addiction causes you to feel overwhelmed more easily by stressful situations, making it more difficult to cope. By developing coping tools and strategies, combined with medication therapy, you can overcome these obstacles and maintain sobriety.

In addition to meeting with your addiction doctor at least monthly, we also encourage patients to use the resources we provide to seek out additional counseling, in addition to 12 step programs.  This multi-step approach gives you the best foundation to building a drug free life and staying clean and sober.

See our Recovery Links for additional counseling and 12 step resources.
